This month the Racoon movie night will screen Incident at Restigouche (1984), the first documentary by Alanis Obomsawin. 🎥🎣
In 1981, 550 SQ cops raided the Mi'gmaq nation of Listuguj (close to the Restigouche town), for the "crime" of continuing their traditional fishing practices. Lucien Lessard, Minister of Recreation under René Lesveque, interviewed by Alanis, launched those attacks which were supported by the media and the justice system. Hopefully they also launched a solidarity wave coming from everywhere, including a blockade of the Mercier Bridge in Kahnawà:ke, 9 years before the Oka crisis.
The film will be screened in its French version, whisper translation towards English will be available, as well a pop-corn and refreshments.
This is a meeting on Wednesday August 28th at 7PM at the Révoltes (2035 Saint-Laurent).
