Legal Self Defense

This workshop was put together by CLAC's Legal Self-Defense Committee. This committee provides support and self-training for activists living with judicial repression. You can visit this section of the website or contact us if you need help.

Legal self-defense means defending yourself in court without a lawyer. It's also a way of collectively taking charge of legal risks, and minimizing the psychological and economic consequences of a legal process. The better equipped we are to defend ourselves collectively, the better we can manage risk and survive criminalization, with a view to continuing our activism for a long time to come.

This workshop can also be useful if you choose to defend yourself with a lawyer, because it's important to understand what happens during your trial. The lawyer won't necessarily explain everything to you.

Workshop Plan :

  1. Presentation
  2. What to do if you get arrested
  3. Contesting a ticket
  4. Basis of the judicial process
  5. Self Defense : is it a good idea ?
