As you probably know, many class action for arrests that happen between 2012 and 2015 have led to a deal with the city of Montréal in which 6 million dollors were given out to arrestees. And, what a coincidence, we are in many of those class action and we know that the cheques are starting to flow in.
Even though we got slim excuses and money, the police continues its repression against anticapitalist activists. For this reason, we ask you if you want to give money to the CLAC legal self-defense fund, so we can keep supporting people arrested during protests or doing direct action against capitalism.
However, as we said in anearlier announce (untranslated... sorry :S) written when the city was offering public apologies to the demonstrators, it is only because we have a few lawyers and university teachers on our side and because most of the protestors were mostly post-secondary student that we are getting those apologies and money. As a matter of fact, in those same years where the Montréal police was arresting us, Val-d'Or police was giving out 75% of their fines to native people. At the same time also, certain years up to 40% of tickets given in Montréal to homeless people, while they are less than 2% of the population. And those are the numbers that are easy to find, since we don't have that much data on racial profiling, the abuse against women, queer and non-binary people and people who are judged as having mental health issues, and more..
So if you received money in a class action, we encourage you to support any struggle against the injustice committed by SPVM or any other struggle for social justice, wether it is finance a indigenous community defending its land, to buy a balaclava to keep you warm the next protest or to pay for childcare who wants to attend a protest. If you want to contribute, here's a description of CLAC's anticapitalist defense fund.
You can send us money by following the instructions over here: Support us!
