Because misfortunes never come singly ... for 19 years now, Montreal's Formula 1 Grand Prix is immediately followed by a second parasitical invasion. More discrete, but every bit as virulent: the International Economic Forum of the Americas, otherwise known as the Conference of Montreal.
This annual meeting of capitalist parasites, Power Corp's privileged invitees, created at the same time as the World Trade Organization (WTO), has the unenviable reputation of being the "Davos of the Americas".
"The Conference of Montreal is committed to heightening knowledge and awareness of the major issues concerning economic globalization, with a particular emphasis on the relations between the Americas and other continents."
Montreal is thus invaded every year by hundreds of internationally important jerks: directors of central banks, finance ministers, industrial leaders, high-ranking officials, financial barons, chiefs of international financial institutions (World Bank, IMF, etc.) and a whole raft of profiteers of the same ilk.
From year to year, these nasty leeches, profitting from the fact that their little get-together passes under the radar, decide on the broad direction of global capitalist exploitation behind closed doors.
The very least we can do is disrupt this obscene banquet!

International Week of Struggle against Parasites
Every year at the beginning of summer, for years now, Montreal has fallen prey to a strange fever. For a period of several days, the air labours under a dense and foul-smelling cloud, residents suffer from a kind of collective tinnitus, a persistent and irritating ringing which disturbs thought and sleep. Many neighbourhoods, especially downtown, are invaded by hordes of blank-faced zombies, stripped of their senses and moving mechanically under the hypnotic influence of a malevolent power.
This disturbing state of affairs is brought on by tens of thousands of parasites who swarm into our beautiful city, stifling its habitual joy of living and injecting it with a paralyzing venom.
Every year, in the month of June, Montreal falls prey to the macho and consumerist virus of the Grand Prix!
Creeping politicians and flashy de luxe dealers are pumping themselves up to suck the blood of this crowd, handed over on a giant checker-board.
Streets are blocked off so that we can be subjected to grosteque advertising and alienating shows.
The forces of repression outdo themselves to maintain the commercial peace.
This year, the Convergence of Anti-Capitalist Struggles (CLAC) is proposing an antidote:

Monday May 27 2013, after the annual Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, we hope to create a space where anti-capitalist allies from all over can reunite to discuss and reflect together, and to talk about what keeps us busy in the different cities where we live.
Travailleurs et travailleuses, syndiquéEs ou non, chômeurs et chômeuses, précaires, étudiants et étudiantes, immigrantes et immigrants, nous sommes tous et toutes concernéEs par la réforme de l’assurance-chômage. Cette plus récente attaque s’inscrit dans le programme d’austérité mis de l’avant par nos gouvernements pour faire reculer nos droits sociaux, des droits, faut-il le rappeler, obtenus de haute lutte tout au long de l'histoire de la classe ouvrière.
Bien que nous déplorions toute forme de concertation avec l’État et de collaboration avec la police, tout particulièrement dans le contexte actuel de répression des libertés politiques (cf. le règlement municipal P-6), ce contingent anticapitaliste revêt un caractère familial et se veut solidaire de l’appel syndical à manifester contre la réforme de l’assurance-chômage.
La solidarité de classe est primordiale entre l’ensemble des travailleurs et travailleuses, car nous subissons tous et toutes, à divers degrés, les politiques rétrogrades qui ne servent qu’à concentrer toujours plus la richesse dans les mains de quelques crosseurs cupides. Nous sommes indignéEs par les inégalités sociales qui appauvrissent et excluent chaque jour un nombre grandissant de personnes. La solidarité de classe doit aussi, peut-être surtout, s’exprimer envers les personnes les plus exploitées et marginalisées de notre société, telles que les mères monoparentales cumulant les jobs a temps partiel, les Autochtones, les étudiantes et étudiants endettéEs, les sans-statut et travailleurs et travailleuses migrantEs, les assistéEs sociaux, les personnes en situation d’itinérance, etc.
Il n’y a qu’ensemble dans la lutte que nous pourrons résister efficacement aux attaques des élites politiques et économiques et freiner le recul social. Mais, selon nous, il est tout autant essentiel de s’attaquer aux fondements mêmes du système capitaliste, car c’est lui qui génère les inégalités. Pour justifier l’exploitation et l’injustice, les élites ont toujours opéré sur le mode du mensonge, de la corruption, de la manipulation et de la violence systémique. La collusion, le copinage et les magouilles de toutes sortes ne sont pas l’exception : se sont les règles élémentaires du jeu capitaliste.
C’est pourquoi le 1er mai prochain, la CLAC vous invite à cette maison de passe (-moi du cash !) qu’est le club privé 357C, ce repaire de crosseurs qui représente fidèlement la « culture » du secret et le chevauchement de la classe possédante, de la classe politique et du crime organisé. Nous n'avons aucune raison de tolérer ce genre de collusion et nous avons toutes les raisons de nous révolter.

It is the second teach-in in a series organized in the context of CLAC's monthly anti-capitalist assemblies in Montreal. It is open to everyone and includes both introductory and more in-depth workshops.
